The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that jobs for statisticians will grow 34 percent between 2016 and 2024, much faster than the growth rate of 7 percent for all occupations. This demand is helping to spark growth in our department.
The department began with a thriving graduate program already in place, and in 2006 an undergraduate degree in statistics was introduced. We began in 2006 with the B.S. in statistics and a single student. In the last 12 years we have added a minor, secondary major and actuarial science concentration for our students. Our future plans for our majors include the inclusion of additional tracks within the B.S. and options for a “4+1” option for completing a B.S./M.S. in statistics.
We have grown from one undergraduate to over 50 majors, secondary majors and minors in statistics. Our undergraduate majors are remarkable students making their mark on the university and the world. They conduct undergraduate research and complete capstone projects collaborating with researchers on topics such as organ donation, human-trafficking, short-term mission trip effectiveness, and hunger initiatives. Our students participate in national programs such as the Summer Institute in Biostatistics and undergraduate events at The Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute.
Upon graduation, our undergraduates have found employment at places as varied as the National Institute of Health to Lincoln Financial. Many undergraduates have continued to pursue graduate degrees at places such as Vanderbilt and Columbia University and several have completed their Ph.D.’s here at Baylor.
The undergraduate programs are our focus on Giving Day. We have been successful in attracting high-ability students in the past, and we would like to further incentivize this growth by providing an undergraduate scholarship for statistics students. Your gifts to the Statistical Science Excellence Fund will be used to support undergraduate students in the department through scholarships and travel awards.
