Help us Recruit and Retain the Best
With much diligent work of our faculty, engagement of our students, and help from donors and friends The Environmental Science department now competes for top undergraduates at the regional level and for graduate students at the national level. Over the past decade our students have become involved in significant research and study abroad programs. For example, one of our undergraduates won the top Baylor University research award and several other students received top national awards. Students routinely serve as interns with the Centers for Disease Control, the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality, Regional Water Authorities, and Texas Parks and Wildlife. Our progress in graduate research and education is breathtaking. Since the inception three years ago, our PhD program has grown to 20 students. And our third doctoral student just graduated this month!
We ask your help, not only to recruit and retain the best students, but to outpace the competition and crack into the top 25 Nationally. With your help, research productivity of Environmental Science at Baylor is NOW tied at number 27 nationally with notable Big Ten and Pac 12 schools. The schools that we are chasing include Ivy League Schools.
With your help we will continue providing high quality research, field school and study abroad experiences for undergraduates and continue excellence in graduate research. How your resources can be used: assessing water quality, assessing air quality, developing therapies to expedite wound healing, evaluating nanomaterial effects in natural and workplace environments, tracking genetic responses to toxic chemicals, tracking factors contributing to climate change; tracing contaminants and stressors in ocean systems with biomarkers in whales; characterizing microplastic wastes in freshwaters.
We also hope to establish a scholarship in memory of Dr. Tom Conroy. When you make a gift, you will have the option to make it to the Environmental Sciences Excellence Fund or the Tom Conroy memorial scholarship efforts.
