History

Who We Are:

The study of history provides a critical knowledge of our world’s institutions and values. An understanding of the past can influence our ability to respond intelligently and effectively to the problems of the future.

The Department of History has roughly 175 majors and minors and 22 graduate students, and our opportunities are abundant. Students can take courses on China, the Vikings, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Russia, the Renaissance, the Holocaust, the History of Warfare, Hunting, Business, Women in America, the American South, the Civil War, and more. With small class sizes, the Department of History fosters a positive learning environment by encouraging intellectual exchange and cooperative relationships. Our graduates are successfully working in a variety of fields, from secondary education to security, public relations to law, business to broadcasting, and graduate school.

Ways to Support:

Your gift to our History Excellence Fund will help provide expanded opportunities for our majors, minors, faculty, and other students at Baylor, including:

  • Conference travel for our history students to present their research.
  • Bringing nationally-known historians and guests to campus. Recent speakers have addressed the Civil Rights Movement, Belief in Early Modern England, the History of Medicine, and Women’s Suffrage.
  • A reception for our Guittard Book Award for Historical Scholarship recipient and for recognition of our Guittard Graduate Fellows and Undergraduate Scholarship Winners.

The James Vardaman Endowed Professorship Fund honors Prof. James Vardaman, who taught history at Baylor for over 30 years. Contributions directly support Baylor Department of History faculty and may be used for, but are not limited to, the support of salary, research needs, scholarship and travel expenses.
