Alicia Martinez was an MSW student at the Diana R. Garland School of Social and a 2020 BSW graduate, as well. In January of 2021, four months before she was set to graduate again from the GSSW, she passed away from complications of COVID-19.
Alicia was described as “the heartbeat of the classroom." She was one of Baylor's bright lights, glorifying God through her dedication to helping others through the social work profession.
The Alicia Martinez Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund in Social Work was established in 2021 by her friends, classmates, faculty and mentors, to honor her memory and her passion for social justice and compassion for others. This endowed scholarship fund provides assistance to deserving graduate students enrolled in the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work with preference given to first-generation students who are pursuing a concentration in social justice.
