Hands-On Learning for Journalism Students

The Journalism department's Advisory Board is fundraising to provide students with hands-on learning opportunities, which might include field trips, alumni mentorship, travel opportunities and company tours.

Last semester, a group of students traveled to DFW to visit the Dallas Star and Toyota Stadium. While there, the students participated in a press conference, met with media professionals and participated in a Q&A session where they gained insight on media roles in the real world. More details of their trip can be viewed here: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=684889127452209&rdid=mRYzNLyBvLXsgOJw

“This trip was so generous, and such an amazing opportunity to see more of the sports journalism world. I’m so grateful for the opportunity as a student to hear from such wise people in the industry and get a backstage view of what I’ve been seeing all my life in sports.” - Mari Walters, Public Relations Student

Trips like these prepare students for a career in the media industry, whether that is in digital or print reporting, public relations, advertising, broadcasting or another area of media communications. Experience-based learning opportunities allow students to connect what they are learning in the classroom to the industry and inspire them to dream big about the future.

Another trip is planned for November 2025 and will be funded by generous alumni and supporters like yourself to remove cost barriers for students.

“I had an amazing time, and it was such an incredible opportunity that wouldn't have been possible without your support and help! As a freshman in the department, having the opportunity to meet with … panelists was both exciting and reassuring to know that Baylor is the place for me to reach my goals. I truly appreciate your generosity and this wonderful opportunity.” - Tatum Vickers, Broadcast Journalism Student

“As students, it truly means the world to us – more than any of us ever truly express – when professors, boards and industry professionals invest their time and resources into our futures ... The entire experience exceeded our expectations, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity.” - Marissa Essenburg, Broadcast Journalism student
