Baylor Business: On Mission with The Belize Project (Belize)

Support Baylor University

Helping Businesses Grow & Communities Thrive

August 08, 2025

Eight Baylor Business students and two faculty worked in consulting teams, using their business skills and experiences to help six Belizean small business owners/entrepreneurs effectively plan, grow, and/or improve their businesses.

"This trip gave me far more than I could have expected. I gained firsthand experience in consulting, communication, and cross-cultural collaboration. I learned how to ask better questions, think creatively in real time, and adapt to challenges in unfamiliar environments. But more than anything, I learned the value of listening, truly listening, to people’s stories, their hopes, and the unique strengths they bring to their work. Spiritually, this trip brought me closer to God. Serving others through business, using the skills I’ve been given to uplift people and communities, reminded me what it means to walk in purpose. I felt connected to something bigger than myself, and I saw God’s presence in every conversation, every challenge, and every moment of growth." - Ade Ogbomo, Political Science Major

"I was able to work with a driven young woman who had four business ideas and a clear desire to do more. After listening closely and evaluating her goals, we landed on the most viable option: launching the first-ever maid cleaning service in her area. My partner and I walked her through every step—market research, startup budgeting, pricing expectations, legal considerations, and a sustainable business model. To anyone considering this mission trip: do it. We were the first cohort to participate in this program. Growth happens when we step outside our comfort zones and walk alongside others with humility and curiosity." - Bryanah James, Junior Finance & Economics Major

"The entrepreneur I worked with was from Orange Walk. She sold coconut water, coconut candies, and coconut oil, and worked with her husband, her daughter, and two employees. My teammate and I heard about her business and then recommended short term, mid term, and long term goals for her to grow and expand her business. Then, we created an excel spreadsheet where she would be able to track her revenue and expenses for each of her products and where she would be able to see the total profit she was making. By using this spreadsheet, she can determine what adding another profit or hiring another worker would do to her bottom line." Margaret-Jane Kacyvenski-Goode, Senior Entrepreneurship and Marketing Student
