Dr. Walter Holmes dedicated his life to educating students in Biology and Botany. He taught, conducted research, and served as the Curator of Baylor University’s Department of Biology Herbarium for over 30 years until his retirement in 2018, after which he was appointed Professor Emeritus of Biology.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Holmes authored or contributed to over 200 scholarly articles and published several books, including two that catalog the Cajun French names of Louisiana native species. He traveled across the Western Hemisphere to collect plant specimens, surveyed areas of Texas and Louisiana for native species, and passionately taught generations of students in Life Sciences.
Dr. Holmes worked tirelessly to preserve the flora, fauna, unique culture, and distinctive lifestyles of the Cajun people of Louisiana, which he considered his greatest accomplishment. His preservation efforts are currently cataloged in the Baylor Science Building Herbarium.
The Department of Biology invites you to join us in honoring the incredible legacy Dr. Holmes left at Baylor University.
