Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty
The Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty utilizes the tools of research, policy, and practice to cultivate evidence-based solutions to the challenges of food and economic injustice.
Our team has worked for over a decade to address food insecurity in Texas. As part of our mission, we have focused on the need to provide child hunger outreach. Feeding America reports “20%, or 1 in 5 Texas children experiences hunger."
We live in a country with an abundance of resources, which provides us an opportunity to end childhood hunger by maximizing access to existing programs. Child Hunger teams at the Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty (BCHP) work with school districts and community organizations to close the gap between children experiencing food insecurity and programs designed to reduce hunger. We focus on implementing alternative school breakfast models that go beyond traditional, before-the-bell service, and on expanding access to and participation in Summer and After-School meals.
Our strategy consists of working collaboratively to promote best practices, providing expertise for program guidelines, and being a trusted voice for the unique needs and concerns of communities and providers.
This year we would like to:
- Increase Alternative Breakfast Models (ASM) to produce an annual increase of 35,000 – 50,000 students receiving a nutritious school breakfast daily.
- Expand After-School Meal Sites to produce 200-300 new after school meal sites statewide.
- Expand Summer Meal Sites to produce 250-300 additional summer meal sites statewide and provide an annual increase of 10,000-12,500 youth receiving a nutritious breakfast and/or lunch daily.
Please join our efforts to combat food insecurity in Texas.
