The Dr. Alden Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by Heather and Mark Bauman in 2021 in honor of longtime Professor and Master Teacher in Classics, Dr. Alden Smith.

Dr. Smith’s wisdom and insight have helped shape the direction of the University Scholars Program, the Honors College, and the Classics Department, creating programs that seek to form the whole person through academic excellence in a Christian context. These distinctive and outstanding programs offer a unique experience for excellent students seeking more from their education than a vocational degree. Furthermore, Dr. Smith’s relational approach helps Baylor offer a supportive environment for students which goes well beyond academics.
Dr. Smith has influenced many individuals through his teaching, mentorship, and commitment to academic excellence. His investment in students extends well beyond the classroom. His kindness, energy, wisdom, faith, and thoughtful guidance have changed the course of countless lives for the better. This scholarship honors the love and faithful dedication with which Dr. Smith has served Baylor University, and most especially, his students.
A Scholarship with Impact
This scholarship assists students attending Baylor University and the unique opportunities offered by the University Scholars Program and the Honors College.
In honor of Dr. Smith and his love of the classical languages and world, recipients of this scholarship are encouraged to explore at least one course in Classics, such as Greek or Latin language, Greek or Roman history, Classical Philosophy, Mythology, Art, Archaeology, early Christianity or Baylor in Italy.
