Baylor Law Update from Dean Toben
Covid-19 has challenged you, and everyone, in our Baylor Law family. We have navigated unchartered landscapes in our professional capacities. In our personal lives, we have faced unusual decisions and made unimagined changes in our behavior. All the while, we have relied upon our fundamental values and have stepped forward to show remarkable resilience in the face of adversity.
In my 29 years as dean of Baylor Law, our faculty has consistently focused upon our students being “practice ready” and resilient in any circumstance. Through this Covid-19 journey, my faculty colleagues have gotten the job done – just as they always have, year in and year out.
Our faculty members moved their teaching from our physical rooms to online platforms within a handful of days in March, providing certainty and continuity for our students. Although the university would have allowed my colleagues an additional week to move online, the Baylor Law faculty, assisted by our first-rate staff colleagues, accomplished the re-tooling in a handful of days so that our students could remain on schedule for graduation and bar exam preparation.
In the fall quarter and going forward, we have moved into a hybrid model, with some classes in-person, some on-line, and some mixed. Because of their unique pedagogical needs, we have especially focused our in-person efforts on our 1L students and our 3L Practice Court students. Our largest PC class in our history has been graciously hosted by a local church with a cavernous sanctuary. We even have a quite large (and expensive!) tent in our parking lot for PC exercises.
Our program has become stronger because our faculty has insisted on the best of education and training for our Baylor Law students. Through all of this, Baylor Law has continued to achieve and gain accolades. You’ll be impressed by the 2019-2020 Program Highlights below.
Your support of the Baylor Law Faculty Fund ensures that our faculty can continue the strong tradition of Baylor Law excellence and resilience. Please salute our faculty through your generosity.
I thank you for your support of Baylor Law and allegiance to our work with our students! May you be blessed and reinvigorated by the coming Holiday Season!
Sincerely,
Bradley J.B. Toben
Dean
